We are at the gate for opening. The first hour on the ridge road is the best birding of the day and almost nobody is there yet.
Slow going by design — we stop wherever there is a mixed flock and stay until it moves on.
On a clear morning the Nanda Devi range is visible from Zero Point. Tea from the flask, and the checklist to go through.

Kamla spent half an hour on a single laughingthrush and I learned more in that half hour than in a year of birding on my own.

Sixty-one species in three and a half hours. The scope is a proper one, not a toy.

Cold and damp at 6am even in April. Take more layers than you think you need.

The main gate on the Almora road. The forest department opens it at 06:00 and we go in with the first group.

Kamla has run the sanctuary's bird count for six years and keeps the ridge's species list, which currently stands at 214. She carries a scope and will happily spend twenty minutes on one bird rather than ticking a list.
About 5 km on forest roads at an easy pace, but with a lot of standing still.
Free cancellation up to 24 hours before the start. If the sanctuary is closed for weather we refund in full.
