An hour out to the quiet dunes past Sam, away from the jeep crowds, for the last light.

We meet at the edge of Kanoi village, where the tarmac ends, and you are introduced to your camel by name before anything else.
Forty minutes at a walking pace, out beyond where the jeeps stop. The last fifteen minutes are open dune with nothing else in sight.
We stop on a high dune about half an hour before sunset. Simpler than it sounds, and the reason people come back.
Chai and kulfi while the camels are watered, then back to the village by torchlight.

We had booked a jeep safari the day before and it was loud and crowded. This was the opposite — twenty minutes further out and there was nobody else there at all.

Sumer is genuinely funny and clearly loves the animals. The camel I rode was called Badal and he had opinions about the route.

Beautiful evening. Bring a scarf, the sand gets everywhere once the wind picks up.

Where the tarmac ends. We leave 75 minutes before sunset, so latecomers miss the light.

Sumer's family has kept camels on this stretch of the Thar for four generations. He takes guests to the dunes his own family uses, which are a further twenty minutes out than the ones the jeeps drive to — the difference is whether you hear engines at sunset.
Most of the time is spent riding or sitting on the dune. The camel mounts and dismounts are the only part needing any effort.
